Subject: TAIWAN - OPERATION BACKPACK
I found your site when I searched for information on the subject USMC
Operation. Thank you for your coverage of the operation.
I was involved in this operation with a much different unit. I was an
Artillery Fire Direction Control Man based on Okinawa with HQ-2-12 from
1962-1964. I was TDY with E-2-12 with a Forward Observer unit during the
initial days of Operation Backpack directing naval gunfire followed by
artillery gunfire and identifying targets of opportunity for tanks.
I liked the photos of the operation you have attached to your site. I
have the original TRIAD supplement (published March 29, 1963), which
outlined the entire operation after the fact. It includes an excellent
array of photographs taken during the operation. I could not identify
any specific photos of your units or mine for that matter, but it is
great history.
I am willing to scan this document and share it with you to add to your
posting. It is a 20 page supplement; the pages are over-sized at 12 x 15
as published.
Keep up the good work and I hope to hear from you soon,
Loren Otto, former L/Cpl
