Served His Country During the Korean War, MGySgt. McDonough ran communication lines to the rifle companies on the from battle lines and through enemy territory. Often he would get caught in enemy lines when the Chinese attacked the Marines. While approaching Marine positions, he would sing in Irish folk tune such as "Sweet Kathleen" so they would know it was him and wouldn't accidentally shoot. He earned the name Red, the Singing Irishman, which he came to be known by and is mentioned in Lt. Joseph Owen's book, "Colder Than Hell." Working for the National Security Agency, MGySgt. McDonough was assigned to military intelligence as a cryptologic chief. he served four tours of duty in the Vietnam War, including as a senior enlisted man during the siege at Khe-Sanh. After his 1975 retirement, he devoted his life tp honoring the courage, valor and sacrifices made by Marines. He was heavily involved with the Chosin Few organization, the Florida chapter of the Disabled American Veterans and worked tirelessly on Veteran causes. In 2011, MGySgt. McDonough chronicled his life and war experiences in his gripping autobiographical memoir titled "My Return from Hell."
